8 Zoom Tricks You'll Wish You Knew Sooner

Although a great many of us have gone back to the office, remote calls and meetings are still the norm. Zoom has become one of the most popular forms of communication during the pandemic. By now, most of us are familiar with Zoom’s basic functions, but did you know that Zoom has a few quick tricks and shortcuts that will help improve your user experience?

It's true!

This video conferencing program gained notoriety due to its particularly user-friendly interface, accessibility across devices, high-quality audio and video capabilities, and collaborative features such as screen sharing and real-time chat, making it a convenient and effective tool for remote meetings and communication. While that’s all well and good, there are a few more hidden features in Zoom’s sleeve that you might not know about yet.

The best Zoom tricks to help you better navigate working from home

Zoom like a pro with these top tips and tricks! Whether you're hosting a call or joining a meeting, these tips will help you look and sound your best.

1. Enter silently

If you’re running late to a meeting and want to enter a Zoom call without making a lot of noise, you can choose to enter the call silently. Simply open the Zoom app and click on Settings. Find the “Audio” Tab and click the box to add a checkmark to “Always Mute the Microphone Tab”.

2. Change your background

Are you worried about your coworkers or boss seeing your messy living room or office? You can easily change the background on your Zoom call to be anything you want. Start by clicking on Settings, then go to Virtual Background, and from there, Zoom will offer a handful of choices, or you can upload any image you want.

3. Mute everyone at once

There may be times where a meeting might get a little too loud, and you’d want to mute everyone in the conference at once. To do so, you can hit Cmd+Ctrl+M on a Mac or Alt+M on a PC. Another option to mute everyone on a call would be to go to Host Controls in the Zoom app, click on Manage Participants, and Mute All.

4. Set up Zoom to show names

If you’re terrible with names, you can set up Zoom to always show the names of the participants on the call. Go to Settings, click on Video and check the box for Always Display Participant’s Name.

5. Never miss another Zoom meeting

If you find yourself forgetting a meeting here and there or just simply love setting reminders throughout your day, you can set up Zoom to remind you of your scheduled appointments. To set up Zoom reminders, download and open the Zoom app on your phone. Go to the Meeting and Settings section and choose Meeting Reminders on your mobile device. The Zoom app will now automatically send you a reminder on your phone when it is time to join a meeting.

6. Zoom’s beauty filter

We all know quarantine did a number on us, and we might not be looking as great as we once did. Thankfully, Zoom has an option to use a beauty filter. To turn on the beauty filter, go to Settings, Video, check the Touch Up My Appearance box, and Zoom will soften your camera’s focus, giving you a smooth and even appearance.

7. Record your meeting onto your computer

There are so many reasons why recording your meeting to reference it later could be helpful. To record your session, go to Settings, click Recording and click On. Once you have done this, you can click the Record icon when hosting a zoom meeting.

8. Quick invite

Forget to add someone to a Zoom call that has already begun? You can quickly add someone with only a few clicks. Start by typing Cmd+I on a Mac or Alt+I on a PC to open the Invite window. Next, click the Email Tab, copy the meeting’s URL, and send it to anyone you want to invite to the Zoom call.
